The Little Morts

Out of the Arizona prison system, the deserts of Egypt, and midtown Tucson comes one of the most fun, entertaining bands around... The DH Crew interviews The Little Morts from Tucson, AZ.

We've got Daniel Long (Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo), Jason Sprague (Drums), Auburn Wade (Guitar, Mandolin, Bass, Lap Steel) Johnny Oxley (Swamp Ash Gibson) and Chris Nicholson (Violin ... errrr, Fiddle), and pretty much defy categorization by combining elements of country, rock, folk, and punk while making damn sure everyone has a great time while we're on (and off) stage. Wanna show your appreciation? The next round's on you!

DH: How did you first get started in music?
My dad was a southern baptist preacher, a real fucking holy roller who was a man of god more often than he was ever a father. But he was also a total Chet Atkins style finger picker. The only time I ever saw his human side was when we'd get together and play country standards and old Irish ballads. It was the only way we had to relate to each other.

DH: Who would you say is your biggest musical influence?
That's a toughie cuz we all have so many. I'll try and list a few albums and bands that really shifted our weltanschauung. Tom T. Hall's "magnificentmusic machine", one of the best damn bluegrass albums ever! "Appetite for destruction" The nitty gritty dirt band, the beatles, David Allen Coe and NWA.

DH: Do you prefer to keep it close to home, or to hit the road?
We're trying to get out on the road more often. We've been really fortunate here in Tucson what with the greatest fans in the world and all but we'd really like to spread the love to new and exotic locations like maybe, Albuquerque.

DH: Give us a goal you'd like to achieve as an artist.
Yup we definitely want to go to Albuquerque!

DH: What is the most difficult obstacle you have had to overcome as an artist?
Stifling. All the stifling bastards trying to stifle, stifle, stifle. bunch of no good lousy stiflers.

DH: Where would you say your roots are? Music, home, life, influences?
Appalachian mountains, Irish wakes, Texas swing and Wyoming cowboys.

DH: Where do the ideas for your songs come from?
My soul is like a boil full of poison so I lance it once in a while and what oozes out we generally turn in to a song, while trying to maintain our pop sensibility of course.

DH: Out of all your songs, which is your favorite or the one you really love playing the most? Why?
"Girl next door" is the wildest, crazy-fun-sexy live bar burner. We have so much fun with that one, there are other songs that have more emotional content or translate better in the recording studio but for live performance that song's the shizzy.

DH: What is the craziest thing you have ever seen at one of your shows?
I saw a UFO land in the middle of the stage once three multihued spheres came out and communicated to me telepathically that we are all one soul busted up into tiny fragments and that there is no such thing as death. Of course that may have just been the acid but it was pretty fucking crazy.

DH: What is the best compliment a fan has ever given you?
Y'all don't sound like any fucking country band I ever heard before.

DH: What advice would you give someone trying to make a go of it in the music business?
Business? This is a business? Shit I suck at business. Don't take yourself too seriously there's enough assholes in this "business" already.

What is your favorite venue to play at?
Surly Wench Pub Tucson, AZ

DH: Do you currently have any albums available for sale? Can you purchase it online?
No we are currently recording our first album. the first three cuts of which you can hear at our Myspace site

DH: Where can our readers see you perform next?
Please visit our website for show times and tour updates.
Maybe just maybe we'll be in Albuquerque real soon!

DH: Final Thoughts... DH Comments about the artist:
Well I tell you what... don't ever challenge these boys to a drinkin or dancin contest! Daniel had my tail spinnin 'round the floor so fast my ass barely kept up with it! All after puttin on one of the finest sets I've seen from a local band in ages! It was love at first listen and it certainly isn't the country your daddy plays!
