Plowed Under

Equally at home in a smoky bar, nightclub, dance hall, or roadhouse, Plowed Under thrills the crowd by playing a unique blend of “roots” music...

From rowdy, raucous bar room anthems like “Paycheck to Paycheck” and “One Track Mind,” to tender, heartfelt ballads like “At The Bottom” and “Yesterday’s Tomorrow,” to the straight ahead rock-n-roll of “Forever Bound,” to the 12-bar blues of “Texas Special,” Plowed Under plays a diverse mixture of songs, while maintaining the common themes of traditional cowboy music. Plowed Under features Rodd Mas on rhythm guitar and vocals, Ben Cox on lead and steel guitar, Ryan Rice on drums and Mike Meyer on bass. The original seed for Plowed Under was planted in 1999, when Ben joined a rockabilly group fronted by Rodd. After several months of playing together, Ben and Rodd discovered that they had similar musical tastes. They had both been writing traditional honky-tonk and country songs in their free time, and eventually decided to create a side project devoted to their mutual interest. When their other band dissolved in early 2001, Ben and Rodd began to focus more seriously on their honky-tonk project. Craving a more traditional country sound, Ben taught himself to play his pedal steel guitar. After two years of writing songs and playing the occasional acoustic gig, Ben and Rodd decided to put a full band together. In the summer of 2003, Ben asked his friend and co-worker, Ryan, if he’d be interested in playing drums for the as-yet-unnamed band. Ryan had played drums off and on since his teens, but had recently purchased a drum kit and had been spending more time practicing in his garage. He jumped at the chance to play with Ben and Rodd, having admired their previous work. With the band now three-quarters complete, all that was left was to find a bass player. Ryan mentioned the opening to his longtime friend Mike, who was also eager to seriously pursue a musical project in some capacity. The four met in Rodd’s living room in September 2003 and ran through some of the songs Ben and Rodd had written. The chemistry was virtually instant and by the end of the night, a band had officially been formed. The songs were written. The band was complete. All that was needed was a name. The band debated the subject for several weeks but were unable to find anything that “just sounded right.” Ultimately, Rodd discovered Trails Plowed Under, a book by Charles Russell about the wagon trails of the Old West that had been plowed under by farmers planting crops on the recently settled land. Rodd suggested Plowed Under for the band name, and Ben, Ryan, and Mike all agreed that it was a great name and really fit in with the style of music they were playing. That was the night that Plowed Under was officially born. After several months of honing their sound, Plowed Under played their first gig, a classic car show sponsored by the Invaders Car Club, in February 2004 at the Rhythm Room. The band played several more gigs over the course of the next year and continued to expand their set list, incorporating new songs by Rodd, Ben, and even one song penned by Mike. Plowed Under is currently putting the finishing touches on their first demo EP and playing gigs around Arizona.
