Mixed Feelings

Last weekend we went to Wiskey River to ease Aaron's craving for a 'real' country bar. When we first got there I had their dress code weighing heavy on my mind. I don't know many specifics but one thing is that men can not wear cut off sleeves. I still can't get used to this idea; a dress code in a bar? I don't get it...

So a few minutes into being there a cocktail waitress comes up to me and asks if I said hi to Steve. Since I have never been there I was a little confused and asked "who?" She says "you're Nina; right?" Really confused. She points to the bartender and says "Steve, the bartender." First thought, Wholly Shit!!! Steve was the bartender I always went to at Prescott Live, the 'It' bar back home. I was excited, at first.

Then as we walk around some more I see a bouncer that looks really familiar. The second time he passes me I see his huge nametag and it hits me, he was a bouncer at Prescott Live that I knew. After talking to him for a few minutes I found out the owner or one of the owners, not sure which, of Wiskey River is Barry, one of the old owners of Prescott Live.

Admittedly I thought this was kinda cool, at first. But after being there for a while I started to realize it was more like a bad dream. It was kind of like the phony world I tried to leave behind, the cheesy bar, the fake people all showed up to haunt me. Some of my friends liked it but the longer I was there the more I felt uneasy. I saw so many similarities and I was sad by the fact that this 'real' country bar we found busted into rap and hip hop every 20 - 30 minutes. Blah! Not feeling it. Sorry to those of you that liked it but it rapidly became a bad dream. That and I was disgusted by the fact that it took two bouncers to come over and tell Jason to put his jacket back on since his sleeves were cut off.

One more thing, I confronted Steve about the dress code and he said "we're not in Prescott anymore, this is the city." Is country music so jaded these days that an Arizona city, in the middle of the desert really requires a dress code? Women can walk around in their underwear and no one would flinch at that bar but men bare their arms and its a crime, give me a fucking break.

Bring back Emerald Lounge and Tupelo Tap Room! They may not have been country bars but at least ALL of the people are real, themselves and not trying to fit in to some glorified city slicker mold. I miss those bars and I want them back, damnit!
